During the Billy Napier Era, there wasn’t a whole lot for Florida fans to cheer for. Napier left town with the worst winning percentage since World War II, and the Gator brand took a serious hit on a national stage.
But even amidst all the losing, The Swamp remained packed, and one Arkansas expert wanted to make sure that Florida fans get their due respect.
The Swamp is one of the elite environments in college football
Tye Richardson is an ESPN Arkansas radio host and is the host of The Morning Rush. He appeared on That SEC Podcast and was highlighting difficult environments to play in as he juxtaposed his trips in 2023 to Baton Rouge and his trip to Gainesville:
“We were talking about Florida earlier. I went to Baton Rouge at night when Arkansas played, and they don't give a damn about playing Arkansas. They don't. LSU fans couldn't care less. And then I went to Florida when they were awful in 2023 under Billy Napier at home at 12 o'clock Eastern. It was louder for the Florida 12 o'clock game than it was for the LSU night game versus Arkansas.
And I was sitting there, because I went to both games in the same year. This wasn't like a 10-year window or something where my ears got leaped up or whatever. And I was sitting there, there's no way this is real. And it was. The Swamp is, man, if, and I think Sumrall is going to get that thing going, that's a tough-ass place to play.”

That infamous afternoon was when Florida botched a field goal sequence at the end of the game, and it was, at least for us here at Hail Florida Hail, the first genuine sign that Billy Napier wasn’t going to make it in Gainesville.
But it also pushes back against the notion others have tried to push that Florida fans are “toxic” and they shouldn’t dare to dream of having high expectations. Gator fans packed The Swamp and sold out virtually every game of the Billy Napier Era despite the product looking like a bad JV team at times. The alternative is to just have apathy and only show up when the team is winning (looking at you Ole Miss).
Richardson’s last point also caught the attention of current coach Jon Sumrall, that if and when Florida starts winning again, The Swamp will reclaim its place as one of the cathedrals in college football.
