Jon Sumrall had another extremely busy weekend in Gainesville. On top of Florida holding its second scrimmage of the season, Sumrall also hosted another batch of recruits with hopes of building the foundation for the class of 2027.
One of the visitors they had in town in an under-the-radar EDGE that Florida is about to engage in a tug-of-war against with two of their notable rivals.
Florida lines up official visit with Marquis Evans
Marquis Evans is an EDGE from Birmingham, AL. Listed at 6’5” and 245 pounds, Evans is a three-star with Rivals and 247, while ESPN has him unranked.
On film, he is a rangy and lengthy presence who can track down QBs and RBs even when it seems like he is well out of the play. As plays start to break down, he has a motor to him that plays very well in the film room and is the type of thing you like to see out of a potential prospect.
His three-star ranking is probably fair for now, as he would need to cause a bit more chaos on film to earn a four-star, but considering he only started playing football in his sophomore season of high school, and he has the size that is almost prebuilt to be an SEC EDGE, Evans is not a player to write off just yet.
Evans was in Gainesville this weekend and was impressed enough by what he saw that he will come back in June for an official visit. And despite the three-star ranking, both Auburn and Miami are considered big contenders, and Evans has visits lined up with both of them. He has also received offers since January from Clemson, Texas, Ohio State, and FSU, among others.
We’ll see if Florida can pry back some of the perceived momentum Auburn had with Evans early on, and if he is a player Sumrall can land this summer.
