This felt like a new low for the Gators.

Think this kind of effort and performance would be tolerated back when Florida legend Brandon Spikes was still suiting up? Absolutely not. On Saturday night in primetime, the Gators hosted Tennessee, but a 10-game home winning streak came to a close.

4 important observations from Florida's embarrassing home loss to Tennessee

This one was never close, as Tennessee jumped out to a 31-0 lead and ended up winning 31-11. Florida came out totally flat and it didn't sit well with a lot of people. The long list of course includes Spikes, as the two-time Florida national champ still follows the program quite closely. He took to social media to let everyone know how disappointed he was in the performance and no one can blame him for this:

Brandon Spikes was miserable watching Tennessee destroy Florida

If this is how Spikes is feeling, imagine what other team greats are thinking too? There are really no excuses for the performance against a hated SEC rival. We understand that Florida fired Billy Napier and that interim head coach Billy Gonzales has taken over.

Still, if the current guys inside of the locker room couldn't get fired up for this kind of a rivalry game, then what kind of a message is being sent? Maybe it's possible that the players are already looking ahead to the offseason, but that can't be the case, especially with Tennessee in town.

Soon enough, a new coach needs to make his way to town and some positive energy needs to be injected all over campus. Will that new coach end up being Lane Kiffin? That's what countless people in Gainesville are hoping for, but LSU is hoping to have a say in things.

If the Gators miss out on Kiffin, then Florida will need to act quickly in going after a strong backup plan. That's not what anyone is hoping for, as the Gators can't afford any additional setbacks. Spikes is not happy with how things are going and he's not the only one. Things need to change and they need to change fast.
