As the class of 2027 is essentially all but locked up for Florida, focus is already starting to ramp up for the class of 2028. Over the weekend, the Gators picked up their first commit for the class, landing four-star wide receiver Armani Strong out of Miami, beating out the Hurricanes, Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC for his verbal commitment.

With two years still to go in Strong’s high school career, what did he showcase as a high school sophomore that made him a prospect Jon Sumrall knew he wanted to be the first 2028 commit for the Gators?

Armani Strong commits to Florida

Listed at 6’1” and 180 pounds, Strong is ranked No. 154 in the 247 rankings, and his 247 Composite ranking is No. 226. He spent his sophomore season with Miami Norland before transferring to Chaminade-Madonna Prep ahead of his junior season.

On film, Strong is the type of player who is going to beat you with precision of route running rather than relying on pure speed to get past an opposing secondary. He is able to hide his intentions of which way he is going until the absolute last moment, and it’s a massive reason why he is able to be open.

When the ball is in his hands, he is slippery, and many of the same traits he has as a route runner translate to his ability to rack up yards after catch. He also has a solid catch radius, and he had a one-handed catch during the 7 v 7 circuit that showcases his overall potential as a pure pass catcher down the road.

Strong was at Florida’s Friday Night Lights event, and things went well enough that he opted to announce his commitment this early in the process.

Now, as we all know with any class of 2028 prospect this early in the process, there is still a long way to go until Strong will suit up on a college campus, as early signing day for the class of 2028 is still a year and a half away. And with Strong now at Chaminade-Madonna Prep, there are bound to be even more eyeballs on him, with programs looking to flip him.

But with room to improve his speed, Strong already has many traits that will translate well once he gets to college, and it will be interesting to see his development over the next couple of years.
