Another day, another big recruiting win for Jon Sumrall. The new Florida head man has yet to coach in any game of consequence for the Gators, but he continues to assert his dominance all over the recruiting trail. The latest player to commit to the cause is four-star wide receiver Armani Strong as part of the 2028 recruiting class. The Hollywood, Fla. native picked the Gators over a handful of teams.
Strong had it narrowed down to these five programs before deciding Florida was the best fit for him.
- Florida Gators
- Miami Hurricanes
- Michigan Wolverines
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- USC Trjoans
On3/Rivals' Hayes Fawcett shared out a graphic of Strong is picking Florida over Miami and others.

With Sumrall being the latest head coach to find success inside of Miami's fertile recruiting soil, we have to wonder if this trend for the Canes will continue fully into next year's cycle. In-state rival Miami has been recruiting well, but far too many blue-chip prospects from South Florida are going elsewhere for college. Given that Mario Cristobal played there and is from there, that is problematic.
As for Sumrall, he already looks like he is in his bag from a recruiting standpoint while leading Florida.
4-star WR Armani Strong is Jon Sumrall's latest recruiting win for Florida
Getting a prospect of Strong's caliber this soon into the 2028 recruiting cycle speaks volumes. According to the 247Sports Composite, Strong is the No. 30 player from Florida, the No. 34 wide receiver in his class, and the No. 226 prospect for 2028. In time, we could see the Chaminade-Madonna star's recruiting metrics improve. He just committed to Florida, but 2028 is still so far away.
What this commitment really tells us is more and more blue-chip prospects are buying what Sumrall is selling. Coming up from the Group of Six level, there were some early concerns about how good he would be as a recruiter. Those have been squashed over the last several months. While the wins may take a minute to come to Gainesville, more and more high-end players are wanting to be a part of this.
Right now, the cracks in Miami's recruiting plans are starting to become more apparent by the day. The Hurricanes may be able to land high-end prospects from all over the country, but they are struggling to keep their best players home. Even more so, there are growing concerns about how much cash is really in the coffer. Miami has been a big spender of late, but it may not be sustainable.

Overall, Sumrall's recruiting efforts seem to be building off each other in a way that most other elite programs would be jealous of. Simply, Miami can learn a thing or two about what Sumrall is doing this soon into his Florida tenure. Authenticity, and more importantly, vision go a long way with teenagers. They want to be told how great they are, but Sumrall has the recruiting chops to make them realize it.
Miami will still win on the recruiting trail, but Strong committing to Florida continues to show its flaws.
