There was a large portion of the country that had zero faith in Florida being the favorite against Ole Miss. Hell, Jon Sumrall told everyone that the idea of Florida being the favorite meant someone was on drugs.
But for those paying attention, and for those who are willing to believe, what just transpired in The Swamp wasn’t a fluke. And frankly, if you're shocked that Florida is now a prime candidate for the playoffs, that’s on those who haven’t been paying attention.
Florida dominates Ole Miss to move to 4-0 on the season
For the record, prior to the start of the season, we here at Hail Florida Hail predicted Florida would beat Ole Miss.
And for the record, we predicted this morning that Florida would beat Ole Miss.
But even we, in our wildest dreams, didn’t envision the straight-up beatdown that was the end result in The Swamp.
Even with the defense's struggles at times, this game was never officially in doubt. Even with a mole from Tallahassee trying to turn off the power on Florida’s opening drive, this game was never officially in doubt. Even with the ESPN GameDay crew almost all picking Ole Miss, this game was never officially in doubt.
If Jadan Baugh isn’t at the top of people’s Heisman list after today, then people don’t know ball. And it was Baugh's threat that opened up other moments on offense, letting everyone share the wealth.
But the reason the vibe is different in Gainesville compared to the previous era is that when Jon Sumrall was asked in the immediate aftermath of the win what he thought, his first comment was, “We have a lot to improve.”
As ESPN also said in the postgame, the sky is the limit indeed with this Florida squad. We used to be forced to clap for The Man in the Black Polo when he scored 55 points against LIU. The Gators just scored 52 points against an Ole Miss squad that had one of the best defensive fronts in the country.
There are plenty of problems to fix, and in time we will point those out.
But given the past five years, all Gator fans should be allowed a night of catharsis like tonight.
