When freshman Florida quarterback DJ Lagway went down with his hamstring injury against the Georgia Bulldogs, Gators fans everywhere were terrified. Was it potentially a season-ending issue for the youngster? Luckily, that won't be the case.
Despite Billy Napier originally saying it was a significant injury for his freshman phenom, the MRI results are in for Lagway and the news is much better than anyone could have guessed. Napier said that his QB avoided a serious injury. Not only that, but the door has been left wide open for Lagway to potentially start against the Texas Longhorns this weekend in Austin:
Florida QB DJ Lagway has avoided a serious injury for the Florida Gators
In the loss to Georgia, Lagway tried making a play with his legs, but he landed awkwardly and immediately was in a ton of pain. Things were only made worse for him when he couldn't get up on his own and a cart was brought out for him.
A lot of Florida fans are making the argument that if Lagway didn't go down, maybe the Gators would have been able to pull off the upset in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, we'll never know what might have happened had the frosh QB stayed healthy.
Moving forward, though, Lagway is going to rehab his hammy and look to get back on the field as soon as possible, while Napier and Co. surely won't rush him back, though. Just because Napier hasn't ruled out Lagway to take on Texas doesn't mean he's going to be playing.
This is something the staff is going to want to take its time with. The good news is that we haven't seen the last of Lagway in 2024. We could potentially see him take the field against Texas, but things are looking much better for him now for the Nov. 16 tilt at home against LSU.
