It has been nice for Florida Football fans to be able to sit back and watch the carnage of bowl season after getting to play early and emerge with a win. As a whole, bowl season has felt more chippy and competitive than past bowl seasons and has had plenty of storylines emerge beyond just the playoffs.

Last night, during the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer had a bit of a meltdown. And Gator fans watching on TV all had the same thought of, "Yep, seen that before."

Florida Football: History repeats itself

Beamer was getting annoyed all night at Illinois' lack of haste when making defensive substitutions. Every time the Gamecocks tried to make a personnel switch on offense, the Illini took well over 15 seconds to make their own switches.

This erupted in the third quarter when Illinois coach Bret Bielema walked over to check on an injured player. Multiple times, he taunted Beamer with his arms out, the same signal refs use when a substitution is being made.

Beamer responded in kind, wishing to speak to the manager.

Bielema knew exactly what he was doing because Beamer was far too prone to respond the way that he did. While Florida didn't play South Carolina in 2024, the last time the two teams met there were some similar antics from Beamer.

Much like his refusal last night to make adjustments to his substitution pattern, Beamer looked for the nearest bus he could find to throw someone under it last after the Gators beat South Carolina in 2023. Beamer stated after the game that:

"The main problem is that we call pressures but don't run them. We play man coverage and don't do a great job of keeping leverage. In the first half alone, we ran a pressure where the corner came, and for some reason, he stopped, and we gave up an explosive pass."

Then, it was revealed after the game against Florida in 2023 that Beamer had kicked something and broke his foot after the game.

It is one thing to be passionate, but it is another to get triggered so easily that other coaches know they can exploit it.

If and when Florida ever sees Beamer again, take notes from Illinois on how to get inside of his head.
