Florida fans raise eyebrows at DJ Lagway’s potential NFL Draft slot

DJ Lagway has obvious NFL talent, but he never really developed any of it while playing for Florida.

With the 2026 NFL Draft in the books, it is that time of the year where our attention goes somewhat toward next year. While Fernando Mendoza went No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders out of Indiana, it is a total crapshoot at this point over who could go first next spring. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning has great odds to be that guy, but so too, in a way, does former Florida star DJ Lagway.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, here are the latest betting odds for who may go No. 1 next spring.

  • Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning: +165
  • Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore: +500
  • Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith: +600
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback CJ Carr: +600
  • South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers: +1200
  • Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin: +1300
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback Drew Mestemaker: +1300
  • Texas Longhorns defensive end Colin Simmons: +2000
  • USC Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava: +2000
  • Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah: +2000
  • South Carolina Gamecocks defensive end Dylan Stewart: +2200
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby: +3000
  • Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Josh Hoover: +4500
  • Baylor Bears quarterback DJ Lagway: +5500

Lagway currently has the 14th-best odds of hearing his name called first next spring, per FanDuel. There are nine quarterbacks listed ahead of him, including Manning, Oregon's Dante Moore, Notre Dame's CJ Carr, and Ohio State's Julian Sayin. While getting to play for his father's alma mater of Baylor now may help recalibrate things for Lagway, he was never a No. 1 overall pick while at Florida.

Slowly but surely, Baylor fans are going to come to the realization that Florida fans did with Lagway...

Baylor fans being set up for failure with absurd DJ Lagway NFL Draft hype

Follow along with this... Let's just say Lagway is the greatest thing to happen to Baylor football since Robert Griffin III. He plays up to his five-star potential in Waco for Dave Aranda. The Bears make the College Football Playoff for the first time ever as Big 12 champions. He wins the Heisman Trophy and there will be a statue in his name, image, and likeness somewhere in the vicinity of Griffin's at McLane.

Whoever has the No. 1 pick next year is infinitely more likely to take a more proven commodity out of a traditional power than him. Manning has obvious NFL pedigree. Carr comes from a famous football family as well. Even if Sayin is carving his own path, he does play at a program NFL teams love to draft players out of in Ohio State. Baylor is just not on any of these teams' level. Lagway is not going No. 1...

While Florida fans are incredibly eager to see what Aaron Philo and company can do inside of Buster Faulkner's offense on Jon Sumrall's team, they will be paying close attention to what all Lagway does in the Big 12. Expect for him to have success starring for the Bears. Baylor may be a higher-end Big 12 team. However, Florida is way more likely to win the national title than Lagway being the No. 1 pick.

Look for both parties to take huge strides forward as a player and as a program during this season.
