As the Gators wind up for another massive recruiting weekend, one of the key prospects a lot of people are going to follow is EDGE Cahron Wheeler out of Baltimore. Wheeler is coming off his official visit to Clemson, and all indications seem to be that his recruitment is a true toss-up.
And if one wants an idea of why Jon Sumrall and crew are going to try and make a huge push for Wheeler this weekend, just turn on his film and you’ll understand within 30 seconds.
Florida hosting Cahron Wheeler on his official visit
Wheeler is listed at 6’5” and 245 pounds. He is a consensus four-star with Rivals ranking him the highest at No. 90 overall.
Based on his film and size, being out of Maryland might be the only reason he isn’t even higher.
One of the things we always try to look for in a top 100 prospect is that there should be a play or two within the first 30 seconds of film that almost no one else in the country has. Wheeler checks that box right away.
His first play features a leaping interception that makes him look like a high-jumping middle linebacker from NCAA 07 (IYKYK), and he caps it with the acceleration to take it back for a TD. His second play is the type that makes you sit up and notice as Wheeler practically shot puts the opposing offensive tackle backward en route to disrupting the QB. Let’s put it this way, there is no chance that OT showed his face at film study the next day.
And the rest of his film is filled with that type of explosiveness and power that simply doesn’t grow on trees and is a big reason why Florida is going to make the push it is making.
After visiting Clemson last week, Wheeler is on campus this week for his visit with Florida. He also has visits lined up with Auburn, Maryland, and Tennessee, with the Volunteers viewed as one of the other main contenders.
Given the makeup of Florida’s class, they have had a bunch of defensive linemen commits, but they still need an EDGE or two.
Wheeler could be that guy if things go well this weekend in Gainesville on his official visit.
