The Gators have been making a big push to land cornerback Kamarui “Bam” Whitfield. Earlier this week, Florida lined up an official visit with the Tennessee commit and has made it clear that they have a strong interest in the three-star prospect from Orlando.

Florida got one step closer to pulling off the flip on Friday as Whitfield publicly decommitted from Tennessee, paving the way for the Gators.

Kamarui Whitfield decommits from Tennessee

We highlighted Whitfield earlier this week when he set up his visit with Florida. Even though he is a consensus three-star from all three major services, we noted what Jon Sumrall was probably intrigued by with Whitfield:

“But despite being a tick shorter than most four-star defensive backs, Whitfield plays with an edge on film that is. He is moved all over the field, but he seems to shine most when he gets to play nickel corner. His read of the game is excellent as he doesn’t overpursue and keeps his lane well. When he gets a chance to make a hit, he hits sometimes like a 6’3” linebacker rather than a 5’10” defensive back.”

Whitfield had been committed to Tennessee since October, and he claims that the Volunteers are still in the mix. Florida also has plenty of company to land Whitefield, even with the decommitment. In addition to Gainesville, he has official visits now lined up with Oregon, Nebraska, and Virginia Tech.

Given that he is from Orlando, one would have to like Florida’s chances on the surface, given the schools involved. As it stands right now, the Gators have one commit for their class of 2027, but have lined up a number of official visits for this upcoming summer and seem to have momentum with a number of other highly rated prospects for Sumrall’s first official class.
