One of the things we can safely say about Jon Sumrall is that he is going to value players who can lay the hit stick on defense. As Florida starts to hone in on who it wants for its class of 2027, there is a theme developing with who Sumrall is targeting.

As Florida’s visitor list for the summer keeps growing, the Gators will be bringing in a current Tennessee commit who checks the boxes that Sumrall and crew are going to like.

Florida to get official visit from Kamauri Whitfield

Kamarui “Bam” Whitfield is a cornerback from Orlando. Listed at 5’10” and 185 pounds, he is a consensus three-star from all three major services and is a current Tennessee commit, having committed to the Volunteers back in October.

But despite being a tick shorter than most four-star defensive backs, Whitfield plays with an edge on film that is hard to miss. He is moved all over the field, but he seems to shine most when he gets to play nickel corner. His read of the game is excellent as he doesn’t overpursue and keeps his lane well. When he gets a chance to make a hit, he hits sometimes like a 6’3” linebacker rather than a 5’10” defensive back.

His stat line doesn’t jump off the page from 2025 (zero interceptions) but make no mistake that he is the type of player who will punch above his weight when given the chance.

Despite his Tennessee commitment, Whitfield has been on the radar of Florida ever since Sumrall arrived. Whitfield was at Florida’s Junior Day in January, where Sumrall made sure to “reaffirm” the offer the Gators first made during the Billy Napier Era.

And while Whitfield received a couple of other Power Four offers in January, including Mississippi State, it’s Florida that has Whitfield’s first official visit lined up for this summer. Currently, he is slated to be in Gainesville at the end of May.
