Florida landed the commitment of tight end Tommy Douglas on Thursday. At first glance, there isn’t too much to be excited about, given that he is a lower-rated three-star by all the services and he falls in the territory of a guy Billy Napier would take only to never pan out.
But rankings don’t tell the whole story for Douglas, and when one puts on the film for Florida’s newest commit, there is a lot to like about Douglas and a lot that could translate once he arrives in Gainesville next year.
Tommy Douglas commits to Florida
Douglas is listed at 6’4” and 235 pounds. He is a tick shorter than some of the other higher-rated tight ends in the class of 2027, but size-wise, he is actually bigger than a lot of the guys ranked ahead of him.
His film paints a picture of a guy who should be way higher than the 679th player in the country because there isn’t a single high school roster in America that wouldn’t take Douglas in a heartbeat. What first stands out is his willingness to maul dudes in the trenches. He’s not a tight end who blocks just well enough not to get called out on it; he genuinely seems to enjoy driving opposing EDGEs to the ground. If Douglas were just a bit bigger, he could probably pass off as an offensive lineman prospect for Florida.
But Douglas isn’t a one-trick pony, and while his route running is nothing elite, his ability to locate the ball and snag it does make him a more than serviable pass catcher. For the most part, he is open, but he has an array of difficult catches, and he makes a few that Florida’s tight ends last year definitely dropped. The most notable is an over-the-shoulder catch for a touchdown that brought up memories of Tony Livingston’s drop against USF last year.
Douglas had offers from Clemson, Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan, so it’s not like he is some charity case that no one else wanted.
If he hits the summer camp circuit, we would imagine his ranking is only going to shoot up and we wouldn’t be shocked to see him as a four-star by the time all is said and done.
