The Gators 55-0 win over Long Island University in Week 1 didn't come as a surprise, in fact, a shutout and a 50-point win seemed relatively predictable.
But to win the way Florida did was truly impressive, and ESPN's metrics back that up.
ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) offers overall rankings, resume metrics and efficiency ratings for all three units.
The efficiency section gives teams a number rating from 0-100.
Florida's defense graded out as perfect, earning a 99.9 efficiency rating. The next highest defense was Georgia at 96.9.
It's easy to see how the Gators earned their grade, yielding just two first downs and 87 total yards during the shutout.
While those stats are enough for a great score in defensive efficiency, forcing two turnovers -- including a fumble return touchdown -- and committing zero penalties were likely what pushed Florida toward perfection.
Gators moving up in rankings
On the heels of Saturday's dominant win, Florida has moved from their preseason ranking of 13th to 12th on FPI.
Although it's a minor change for the Gators, a pair of conference foes slipped past Florida.
After losing to Florida State 31-17 Alabama dropped from third to 13th in FPI.
Texas A&M won their Week 1 matchup against UTSA 42-24. However, they were expected to win by more than 18 points, and the Aggies didn't pull away until late in the third quarter.
A&M's worse-than-anticipated performance moved them down from ninth to 14th in ESPN's FPI.
The changes have moved Florida to the seventh-best SEC team in the rankings.
Playoffs?
FPI gives the Gators a 30.8 percent chance at making the College Football Playoffs, which is tied for the 13th best odds in the country.
In line with those odds is Florida's 4.2 percent chance to make the National Championship and their 1.5 percent chance to raise a championship banner.
