While things have been frustrating on the field the past couple of weeks, there is hope among Gator fans for the future given the recruiting class of 2027 that Jon Sumrall has built. As it stands right now, Florida is No. 6 overall in the 247 Composite rankings and No. 3 within the SEC (behind Texas A&M and Oklahoma but ahead of teams like Georgia and Texas).
Headlining Florida’s class of 2027 is recent flip Easton Royal. After it seemed like Florida was well out of the running, the Gators pulled off the flip last weekend.
And if one thinks that Royal is using a flip to Florida as leverage to get more money out of Texas, his comments on Thursday make it clear he intends to arrive in Gainesville this spring.
Easton Royal doubles down on his commitment to Florida
With Sumrall in attendance, Royal’s Brother Martin Crusaders defeated John Curtis Christian 36-28 on Thursday night. Royal had 82 receiving yards and 38 yards rushing. He also scored two TDs.
He was asked after the game about hitting the Gator Chomp and what it meant to have Sumrall on the sideline to check things out in person. Royal didn’t sound like someone planning on flipping again before December:
“It means a lot. It just goes to show why I changed my decision from Texas to Florida. He’s a great guy, great coach. Coach (Marcus) Davis, great guy, great coach. Coach Buster (Faulkner), the whole receiving coaches' room, that’s the type of guys that I want to play for and be led by, look up to, and just get developed by.
Florida, it’s a good place to start a family after college, build businesses, and things like that.”

Florida fans have a right to feel paranoid given that nothing is final until it is final, but there is also reason to believe that Royal is sincere about his commitment to the Gators. His massive NIL deal probably doesn’t hurt, but Royal seems to have genuinely bought into the vision that Sumrall is trying to build.
And while he can’t suit up for Florida this year, the excitement for next year is going to be through the roof. For as fast and dynamic as Vernell Brown III is, now imagine a player even faster on the field that opposing defenses have to account for. Even if Dallas Wilson fills the role of “possession receiver,” that still gives Florida as dynamic a trio as any in the country, and that’s before any potential transfer portal additions.
