Perhaps the biggest storyline to come out of Florida's loss to Kentucky was that DJ Lagway actually got benched. The five-star QB has been a shell of himself this season, and three more interceptions on Saturday gave Lagway the unfortunate honor of having thrown the most in the country through Week 11.
Billy Gonzales didn't exactly guarantee Lagway would be back as the starter after the game on Saturday, and once again on Monday, he made zero promises on Lagway.
DJ Lagway is not a lock to start on Saturday
Gonzales was asked whether or not there would be a QB competition this week to get the start against Ole Miss, and he didn't exactly shut down the notion that we could see Tramell Jones on Saturday:
"I think there's competition everywhere. That was my decision to take him out of the game, but it's not all on him, and I told him that.
If a pitcher is struggling, you get the next guy in. It just wasn't his day. Same thing for DJ. It's a different comparison, but there's a bunch of pitchers in the Major League that don't have great days."
Gonzales would later go on to say that Lagway would be getting the first team reps in practice on Monday, but his answer leaves the door open for a week of speculation.
Jones is the four-star freshman out of Jacksonville who rose up and beat out Aidan Warner and Harrison Bailey for the backup job after a strong fall camp. Jones played in the opener against LIU and looked solid, and this past week was the first time we had seen him since.
While Gonzales praised Jones and said he did a "fantastic job," the data would say otherwise. Jones was 9/17 for 60 yards. If you are keeping score at home, that's 3.5 yards per attempt.
To give context to how bad that is, Warner averaged 5.3 yards per attempt during last year's debacle against Texas.
If we had to guess, Lagway is bound to be the starter on Saturday unless he just has a horrendous week in practice.
But, if Gonzales found the hook on Lagway once, we would have to imagine he isn't going to be shy in using it again if he has to.
