DJ Lagway potentially transferring could be needed for Florida's rebuild to begin

The Florida quarterback has been a far cry from what fans thought he would be for the Gators this season.

After ending the season 7-4 in 2024, coming back in a huge manner with big wins over No. 22 LSU and No. 9 Ole Miss, as well as a win over Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, the Gatos had what seemed like a lot of momentum going into the 2025 season.

That momentum came to a screeching halt when Florida started 1-3 with losses against USF, No. 3 LSU, who is no longer ranked, and No. 4 Miami, who no longer runs the ACC. Now sitting at 3-6 this season after firing Billy Napier three weeks ago and back-to-back losses to No. 5 Georgia and Kentucky, Florida is in rebuild mode, but one thing may have to happen in order for that to start.

DJ Lagway could be heading for the transfer portal and Florida needs to be okay with it

Like the team as a whole, there was a lot of hype for quarterback DJ Lagway heading into the 2025 season. He was being seen as one of the best quarterbacks in football and was going to lead this team to potentially its first College Football Playoff appearance. Instead, Lagway has been a big source of problems for the Gators this season.

Looking at Lagway's stats for this year, he only has 1,762 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, which leads all QBs in college football. There are only three games left for the Gators this season, and Lagway was benched in the third quarter against Kentucky because of his play.

Lagway didn't even play the full season last year, and his stats are most likely going to be better than they are this season. With Lagway getting benched against Kentucky, that could be the final straw for his reason to want to enter the transfer portal, and in all honesty, he needs to in order for Florida to truly rebuild.

The Gators need a totally clean slate with whoever they bring in to be the next head coach, and that includes some of these players in the building now. Lagway did some great things in a Florida uniform, but it is time for a change.
