With the transfer portal officially opening up in a few weeks, the first big hit has arrived for the Florida Gators and new head coach Jon Sumrall. On Monday morning, quarterback DJ Lagway provided the update fans were hoping wouldn't come, announcing he plans to enter the transfer portal.

Billy Napier regime officially closes the book with DJ Lagway transfer portal news

Lagway joined Florida as a 5-star quarterback and he had plenty of people ready to see him live up to the hype in Gainesville. Since then, however, Billy Napier has been fired and he's set to become the new head coach at JMU. Florida brought in Sumrall as his replacement, with a new era on the way.

The hope was that Lagway and Sumrall would hit the ground running and work together to bring Florida football back to an elite level. However, that's not going to be the case. Per On3's Pete Nakos too, there are already three teams to 'watch' as his transfer destination. That'd be Miami, Baylor and LSU:

Former 5-star Florida QB DJ Lagway plans to enter the transfer portal

Let the speculation begin. These three teams all make plenty of sense for Lagway. Starting with Baylor, he's a legacy of the program, with his dad suiting up for the Bears during his college days. Lagway is also a Texas product, ranked the No. 1 player in the country out of the Lone Star State for the 2024 class.

Could he be ready to return home? At LSU, Lane Kiffin is ready to make a major splash in Baton Rouge. What better way to do that than to bring in a former 5-star prospect and a player he's clearly a fan of? Kiffin has been known to ruffle some feathers and he'd love to land a jab on Florida.

Last but not least, Miami is going to need a Carson Beck replacement. Mario Cristobal is no stranger to bringing in elite QB talent from the transfer portal, also doing so with Cam Ward for the 2024 season. Might Lagway be next for him?

No one knows, but what we do know is that the youngster won't be suiting up for the Gators next year. Sumrall himself will be looking to the portal for some quarterback help. Again, Lagway joined Florida with a ton of hype, but this end to his Gator career is incredibly disappointing.
