One of the first things Jon Sumrall did when he was hired at Florida was to work to lock down his QB for the class of 2027. Very quickly, he set his sights on Sarasota Cardinal Mooney QB Davin Davidson, who was just a low-tier QB who has since risen to a top-125 overall prospect and one of the building blocks for Florida’s class of 2027.

Davidson is set to be in attendance in The Swamp against Oklahoma to hopefully shore up this year’s class of commits. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how his 2026 high school season has been going.

Davin Davidson is set to be in The Swamp on Saturday

After winning the FHSAA 2A state title, Cardinal Mooney looks poised for another deep run in the playoffs. They went 9-1 this year and scored at least 39 points in every single regular-season game. In the MaxPreps rankings, which do have their fair share of issues in 2026, they are ranked No.3 in Florida’s 3A.

Davidson’s stats are in line with what he did in 2025. He is averaging 160 passing yards per game, compared to 157 yards per game in 2025. His touchdowns per game are also up a tick, though his interceptions are also up a tick.

When we reviewed his junior film back in January, when he first showed up on the radar for the Gators, we said:

“Davidson stands tall and doesn’t seem to panic much in the pocket. He frequently is able to fire throws into tight windows, and he is very comfortable when having to throw on the run, despite his lanky frame that could make throws like that a challenge.

He has some scramble ability, but it is not a key component of his game.”

A lot of that still shows in his senior film that is out there. He is still at his strongest when rolling to the right and firing downfield. His film also makes it seem like he could be used in the run game more, but he has under 100 yards rushing this season.

What we will note is that he seems to want to roll right a tick early rather than hang in the pocket or step up in the pocket. There are a couple of throws he makes where he stays, takes a hit, and still makes the throw, but more times than not he seem eager to leave.

Mind you, these are plays where he is still making something good happen. We just know rolling right as a first option in the SEC will get exposed.

It will be interesting to see the long-term development for Davidson, as Florida could have a bit of a logjam on its hands for the 2027 season at QB. Tramell Jones and Aaron Philo will have decisions to make about whether they are staying or leaving, true freshman Will Griffin has been making strides in practice, and Sumrall will need to decide if he is grabbing a QB out of the transfer portal.

So it might be a couple of years before Davidson is in a position to make noise in Gainesville, but if he can clean up a couple of things, there is a pathway for him to be an effective QB down the road for the Gators.
