The theme for Florida in 2026 has been a lack of consistency. This has been a squad that sweeps Arkansas and beats FSU twice only to also drop a series to High Point, get swept by Alabama, and drop a game to Jacksonville.
At the core of Florida’s issues has been its inability for its starting pitchers to get deep into the game and their lack of attention to detail. Both were on display on Thursday night as Florida dropped the opening game to Ole Miss.
Florida loses game one to Ole Miss
We are now in the territory where it is fair to raise questions about Liam Peterson. He came into the year as a potential top ten draft pick, and he does not look like that at all right now. His overall ERA is actually the lowest of his career at 4.03, and he is on pace to eclipse 100 strikeouts for the first time in his career, but his inability to get deep into games popped up once again on Thursday.
Peterson went 3.2 innings on 97 pitches, giving up six hits, three walks, and ultimately three runs before departing. Of Peterson’s eight starts this season, he is now averaging 4.2 innings per start. Only once this season has he been credited with a quality start.
But it’s not just Peterson, as the Gators as a whole gave up eight walks and hit two more. Kevin O’Sullivan touched upon the short outing after the game:
“We preach we got to at least get five out of our starter and obviously he didn't have his great command tonight. Neither did many of the guys that threw tonight, to be honest with you. Ten free passes again, eight walks, two hit by batters.”
But the attention to detail also applies to Florida’s lineup. After drawing a ton of walks against Arkansas, Florida drew just three walks while striking out ten times against Ole Miss. O’Sullivan felt Florida battled well enough at the plate, but after Cade Kurland hit a two-run home run to pull within 6-4 in the 8th, another moment caught the ire of O’Sullivan:
“We get somebody on and all of a sudden somebody runs into a ball with the wind blowing to left. And the pickoff is just inexcusable. We're not going anywhere, we got the tying run at the plate, we go to the bench, bring Sam (Miller) in, maybe he gets the ball up in the zone, maybe he runs into one. Those mistakes at that point of the game obviously it hurts."
Game two will be on Friday at 6:30 PM.
