Florida might be the hardest team in America to figure out. One has a better chance of flipping a coin to predict any individual game than trying to do any predictive analysis.
Because the 2026 edition of the Gators has a ceiling that could result in a national title. They also have a floor that could get them bounced in two games once the NCAA Tournament begins.
Florida’s variance is impossible to ignore
The Gators lost last night 4-3 to Jacksonville, who came into the game having just been swept by UNF, and even with the win, are now 13-16 on the season. Florida has a 3-1 lead in the 8th inning and had two outs with the bases empty before the wheels fell off, which culminated in the game-winning run being scored off a passed ball.
It didn’t help that Florida only had five hits of its own, a caught stealing, and yet another fielding error.
In a vacuum, Florida didn’t use the front end of its bullpen on Tuesday, and the result might have been different during a weekend game. And while it is Florida’s first loss in a midweek game, something they struggled mightily with in seasons past, it’s yet another step backward after taking a huge step forward last week.
This has been Florida’s yo-yo season so far:
- Win both games against Miami
- Lose series against High Point
- Sweep South Carolina
- Get swept by Alabama
- Beat FSU twice
- Sweep Arkansas
- Lose to Jacksonville
The wild part for Florida is that computer analytics love them. Following the sweep against Arkansas, the Gators were No. 5 in RPI and are now 12-4 in Quad One or Quad Two games this season. Their loss against Jacksonville is now their fourth loss against Quad Three or Quad Four.
Of teams ranked in the Top 15 in RPI, the Gators are the only team with more than two losses against Quad Three or Quad Four opponents.
This matters because once Florida makes it to the NCAA Tournament, even if they are hosting, they have to prove they can navigate those early games and not get sent to the loser’s bracket. Right now, that is far from a guarantee.
But if they can survive those early games, this team has the capability to get on a run and wind up back in Omaha.
