Florida’s QB competition is one of the main subplots of fall camp for 2026. Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones are battling it out to be QB1 for Jon Sumrall’s maiden voyage in Gainesville. Sumrall has stated all offseason that battle is razor-tight, though the common belief is that Philo has the advantage.

But during a media appearance this week, Philo admitted something he was told to work on that doesn’t 100% align with something Sumrall said during SEC Media Days last month in Tampa.

Florida’s QB battle keeps raging on

During his media appearance this week, Philo was asked about the QB competition between him and Jones. Both QBs, in their respective appearances, indicated there is a healthy competition, and both have respect for each other.

Philo also indicated what Sumrall told him he needed to work on this offseason after Florida’s spring camp:

"Probably turnovers. Not trying to force anything. Trying to do a better job of protecting the ball, playing winning football, and then obviously just keep getting reps with those guys, keep building chemistry, just keep trying to build that connection as much as we can."

That’s fair enough. Philo had two interceptions during the spring game, and also took two sacks, while Jones had no interceptions and no sacks in the game.

But last month while making his rounds at SEC Media Days, Sumrall stated:

"Philo's comfort level or confidence within what we're doing schematically is more advanced early on, and probably still is for that matter. Tramell did some really good things, through, in the spring at times. His highs were like, 'Whoa.' The problem, at times was the lows. You're like, 'Hey, we can't do that. That'll lose the game.'"

Turnovers may be Tramell Jones’ path back into the race

We point this out because the narrative that seems to be building around Philo, based on Sumrall’s own quotes and insider reports that have leaked out, is that Philo has been the more consistent of the two QBs on a day-to-day basis. And Sumrall's quote from last month made it seem like Jones is far more mistake prone that Philo.

And perhaps we are reading too much into Philo’s own quotes, and he is just striving for perfection, but his being told he should do a better job at protecting the ball runs in contrast to someone being billed as the more consistent QB.

Unlike the NFL, we as the public don’t have the benefit of a preseason slate of games to make judgments prior to Florida playing for real. The good news for Florida is that they open up against FAU and Campbell before taking on Auburn, so there will be chances for in-game reps before Florida’s SEC opener.

It’s all just something worth taking note of as Florida tries to figure out its most important position ahead of the 2026 season.
