Are the Florida Gators fading for Jalen Brewster?

There was a lot to unpack from Brewster's comments to 247Sports Zack Nagy, but the key message is that Nagy quotes Brewster as saying that he'll make a final decision in a couple of weeks and that the Gators might be out of the mix. It's a surprising report considering all the information that came out of Brewster's visit to Florida from June 11–13 was that the Gators were the top competition to flip Brewster from Texas Tech. That message stayed consistent when Brewster finished with his Texas Tech visit last weekend.

Florida losing out on 5-star Jalen Brewster would be disappointing but not shocking

If Brewster has decided to drop the Gators, it's certainly a disappointing result, but Jon Sumrall was always fighting an uphill battle against the deep pockets of Texas Tech. The Red Raiders, through the wealth of mega-booster Cody Campbell, have shown that they will do whatever it takes to win. They got Brewster to commit early and have kept giving him more and more in order to fight off these other programs. At a certain point, this was going to be a business decision for Brewster, no matter how much he liked the Gators and pumps up the program on his social media.

So yeah, it's frustrating to be this close to a bona fide program-changing commit just to have the run pulled out from under, but if any of you thought that Sumrall would come out of the gate, land a five-star prospect and stay in deep competition to flip over five-star prospects you'd be lying, But Sumrall has alreadyshown those sorts of recruiting chops and there's no reason. To think that this won't be standard going forward. Sumrall has lived up to his promise to get Florida back on the radar for the top recruits in the country.

What's next for the Florida Gators in the 2027 recruiting class?

Brewster says he is still a couple of weeks away from a final decision, so there's no reason to think that Sumrall won't continue to check in as that date approaches. There's also the business of five-star wide receiver Easton Royal, who is committed to Texas, but has Florida and LSU in his sight lines. Wouldn't it be interesting if Brewster continued to consider the Tigers, but it came at the expense of losing Royal, who is a New Orleans native.

There is also four-star cornerback Raheem Floyd, who is one of the Gators' top remaining uncommitted targets, and in-state defensive back Kamauri Whitfield. Florida is heavily favored by the Rivals/On3 to land both players. Whitfield has announced that he'll make his final decision on July 6, while Floyd is also expected to make his pledge in the next few weeks.
