Unless Florida just lays a complete egg against Campbell, there isn’t a ton this Saturday is going to reveal about whether or not the Gators are going to be ready for Auburn next week. Florida could score 70 points, but that by itself isn’t going to tell the whole story. Remember, Florida scored 55 points last year against LIU.
One thing a game like this is able to tell us is who is cemented in the depth chart and who might be buried for good. These are players whose snap counts we are going to monitor on Saturday.
Five Gators who will have intriguing snap counts on Saturday
Micah Mays Jr.
With Eric Singleton Jr. presumably out for Saturday, it will be interesting to see who the Gators lean on as their primary third receiver. TJ Abramas got 27 snaps, and Micah Mays Jr. got 26 snaps against FAU. Bailey Stockton, who had a touchdown, had just 14 snaps.
Mays in particular is the one to keep an eye on because on Aaron Philo’s interception, the pass doinked off the hands of Mays into the arms of an FAU defender.
After being a spring game breakout player, will Mays continue to get snaps or did his mistake from last week push him down the chart?
Roderick Kearney
There were so many angles to touch on after the game that Roderick Kearney’s role was somewhat buried in the headlines. He wound up playing 37 snaps along the offensive line, bouncing between both guard positions. The former top 150 overall prospect from the class of 2023 has taken north of 20 snaps in a single game twice prior to last week.
So if he gets another 30-snap day, it’s clear Sumrall wants him as his rotational guard.
Ben Hanks III
The former borderline five-star got the start against FAU, and he did have a pass breakup, but he was also emblematic of Florida’s hesitancy to play aggressively in coverage. So as a result, he did give up several completions underneath, and he wound up with just 31 snaps while J’Vari Flowers and Dijon Johnson wound up with more.
Does Hanks get another start, or has he been relegated to rotational duty?
Kofi Asare
The former UMass transfer only saw 10 or more snaps in four games last year, and even coming into this season, he wasn’t viewed as a primary guy along the defensive line. But on Saturday, he had 30 snaps and had four tackles.
Did he do enough to get an even further look compared to LJ McCray?
KJ Ford
The true freshman played just six snaps against FAU. After getting plenty of praise during fall camp as a potential impact player, Jon Sumrall made no indication at his Monday press conference of any injury Ford was nursing, so it will be interesting to see if he gets double-digit snaps or not.
