With Florida getting ready to take on Campbell, there isn’t a ton that Florida can do that will impress anyone around the country. To Campbell’s credit, they are improved compared to last year, and they are coming off a win over Western Carolina, but it is hard to move the needle nationwide playing any FCS opponent.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things the Gators can improve upon ahead of next week’s matchup with Auburn, and these are some of the things we hope Florida can accomplish this Saturday.
Three things Florida can accomplish this week against Campbell
Go long off a play action
Florida had a dominant performance on offense against FAU, and there was very little to critique from their 66-point night. The one glaring juxtaposition was Florida’s approach off play action compared to their approach on a standard pass.
As Buster Faulkner’s system showcased, he has a ton of motion that forces defenders to make three choices at once, and if they screw up one, it can be a touchdown. We will note that, off of play actions, most of Florida’s passes were near the line of scrimmage. Florida’s ADOT (Average Depth of Target, AKA how far down the field the wide receiver was) was 5.5 yards off play action against FAU.
On standard passes with no play action, Florida’s ADOT was 11.5 yards.
It should be noted that all three of Florida’s touchdown passes from Saturday came off a play action. We just wonder if Florida has it in the bag to run a play action and then find Vernell Brown III 40 yards down the field.
Fix Harrison Moore’s snap issues
For the most part, the offensive line was good enough against FAU. They gave up zero sacks, and while there was some pressure here and there, it felt like a much cleaner operation than what we saw in the spring.
The most glaring thing of note was the snap issues that center Harrison Moore had. His most glaring moment was the high snap that led to a 20-yard loss near the goal line, but there were several other high snaps he had.
As a side note, these are the same snap issues that Georgia Tech fans railed against last year and were the impetus for why they weren’t sad to see Moore leave.
At his press conference on Monday, Sumrall noted that four of Moore’s five bad snaps came on the same type of blocking assignment. This week will be a good test to see how quickly things get fixed.
Corners don’t play ten yards off the ball
Speaking of things that need to be fixed, the single most glaring concern that came from Saturday was the cushion that Florida’s corners were giving FAU all night long.
Sumrall acknowledged that it is something they plan to fix. Defensive coordinator Brad White made it seem like a communication issue that, ironically enough, was a byproduct of the noise in The Swamp.
We will believe it when we see it because what we saw on Saturday is the tendency that White was known for at Kentucky. But he claims there will be a quiz this week to improve their awareness, so we shall see if it gets fixed.
