Florida Football Recruiting: DJ Lagway teammate offered PWO with Gators
As Florida football fans get excited for the arrival of five-star QB DJ Lagway, the coaches at Willis High School would probably tell you that they have more players who have contributed to their success beyond just Lagway.
Yesterday, the Gators offered a preferred walk-on spot to one of Lagway’s favorite targets, Debraun Hampton.
Florida Football: Shake and bake
Hampton is an unrated wide receiver listed at 5’11” and 170 pounds. He does have offers from Gardner-Webb, Northern Arizona, Texas Southern, and Prairie View A&M.
Often lined up to the back of Lagway, Hampton is slippery once he catches the ball. We wouldn’t say he has an elite burst like Tre Wilson, but he is able to make subtle enough moves that make him a problem for opposing defenses to bring down.
While his chances of ever actually taking the field alongside Lagway in a Gator uniform are low, one intriguing thing from his Hudl film is his punt-returning prowess.
From what we counted, Hampton has already found the endzone five times through his first six games this season on punt returns. Granted, a couple came back due to flags, but it does showcase more of his ability to make guys miss.
And as we have seen this year, just because someone is a great wide receiver doesn’t mean they are a great punt returner, so this could be an area in which Hampton could find his niche.

Ultimately, Hampton will have to decide if he wants to follow Lagway to Florida or find somewhere that can promise him better playing time. Based on his film, he feels like a player who should have more offers than what he currently has.
But in the world of recruiting, where guys start to blend together, a guy like Hampton can get lost in the shuffle.
The chosen son for Florida football is trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.
