Florida basketball: Gators make top-ten for transfer big man
By Will Thomas
Florida basketball has gotten involved early with multiple transfers, such as Eddie Lampkin and Demarcus Sharp.
Now it’s clear that Golden and his staff are in on a big man transferring out of the Southern Conference.
Wofford transfer BJ Mack named his top ten schools this afternoon, with the Gators making the cut.
Other schools on his list included LSU, Xavier, Arkansas, and others.
Mack is a little undersized compared to other SEC big guys at 6’8”, but his 245-pound frame enables him to score against anybody he’s matched up against.
He has averaged over 16 points per game in both of his last two seasons. This past year he put up 16.6 points per game and grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game.
Mack also shoots the ball very well from the free throw line for a forward, sinking them at an 80.7% rate this season.
Some see his size as a disadvantage, but BJ uses it to improve his game. He’s very good at maneuvering through bodies and getting close to the rim and then is able to use his strength to get the bucket rather than just laying it over the defender.
One part of Mack’s game that I like a lot is how disciplined of a defender he is. He averaged less than two fouls per game this season, allowing him to stay in games late and not be limited by foul trouble.
In a physical league like the SEC, the ability to defend without fouling and stay on the floor down the stretch is invaluable.
Mack is an important transfer target for Golden due to the Gators’ lack of depth at the center and forward positions. With Castleton gone to the pros and Jitoboh transferring out, there aren’t a lot of bodies down there.
It’s critical that Golden bring in one or two big-man transfers, and Mack may be one of his best options.
Keep up with Florida basketball at Hail Florida Hail.
