It has been a great offseason so far for the Florida Gators, but it seems the first set of bad news has hit Gainesville. According to SB Nation’s Dawg Sports’ DawgOutWest, Florida’s best pass rusher Brenton Cox Jr. “will miss a significant portion of fall camp and the 2021 season.”

They went on to say, “Cox suffered a foot injury following a recent scooter accident, and surgery on the injury resulted in a screw being inserted into his foot. Sources close to Cox went on to say that he will miss at least “a few months,” and that his recovery will stretch into the 2021 season.”

This is not good news if this report is accurate.

Sports Illustrated’s All Gators publisher Zach Goodall commented on this report, and it wasn’t promising for Gators fans.

Goodall tweeted and said, “So, I can’t confirm anything about a timetable. But Cox was wearing a boot on his ankle and riding around on a scooter during UF’s recruiting camps. That much I know.”

Will Brenton Cox Jr. be ready for Week 1?

That is the big question. While Goodall did confirm there was clearly an injury to Cox, there is a glimpse of hope about him not confirming the timetable. However, I will say, for this to be a report and for Goodall to know Cox was in a boot, it does not look good.

I will say, the Dawg Sports report also pointed out that Cox tweeted this tweet:

The 2022 part is scary to read, but let’s hope that is not how he meant it.

Cox is poised to be a monster for the Gators in 2021, and their defense depends on him generating pressure on the quarterback. It is also worth noting that the Gators play Alabama Week 3 on September 18, 2021.

Not having Cox against Alabama will hurt a lot, and even though it is just one player they will be missing, it is one of the most significant. If the Gators are going to beat Alabama, having Cox on the field will be crucial.

Time will tell if Cox misses extended time, but fingers crossed he heals up from whatever is wrong with him.

The Gators need him in 2021.
