Former Florida Gators tight end Jordan Reed has decided to retire from the NFL after a seven-year career, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

Reed, who started at Florida as a quarterback in his freshman season, made the switch to tight end in 2011. Reed was never a superstar at Florida, but he was a well-respected player, and fans loved what he brought to the field.

In his three years at Florida, Reed caught 79 passes for 945 yards and six touchdowns. He also added five rushing touchdowns his freshman season with 328 rushing yards and 252 yards passing, and three scores through the air.

The former Gators tight end entered the 2013 NFL Draft and was selected in the 3rd round, 85th overall, to the Washington Football Team. Reed was impactful in his rookie season, catching 45 passes for 499 yards and three scores.

However, injuries really impacted his NFL career, and Reed even had to sit out the entire 2019 NFL season because of concussions. Reed told ESPN that those same concussions were the reason he ultimately had to retire from the NFL.

Reed’s best NFL season came in 2015 when he was one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Reed ended the 2015 season with an impressive 87 catches, 952 yards, and 11 touchdowns. He put up those numbers in only 14 games as well, highlighting just how special he was that season.

In his final season, his lone season playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Reed caught 26 passes for 231 yards and four scores.

Reed walks away from the NFL with 355 receptions for 3,602 yards and 28 touchdowns. Reed made one Pro Bowl in his career after the 2016 season and was featured on the NFL’s Top 100 players two times, coming in at No. 77 in 2016 and No. 65 in 2017.

All Gators fans should be proud of Reed’s accomplishments, and Hail Florida Hail wishes Reed well in his retirement and whatever is next for him. Go Gators!
