2. Solidifies Mullen in Gainesville

If Grantham would have left, it could be safe to assume Mullen might have started looking around.

Don’t panic Gator Nation, I don’t think he would go anywhere because he has things pretty good in Gainesville. But losing your defensive play-caller might be enough motivation to dip your toe in the water to see what’s out there.

But, when you look at what’s available, the pickings are pretty slim. Here’s what’s open thus far:

Baylor — Head coach Matt Rhule is going to be the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers, leaving a big opening in Waco. But, it’s a big job at Baylor and you can bet the expectations are going to be high for whoever gets the gig.

Mullen factor: Not really in the cards. He could do good things with the offense, but his cupboard is pretty full with Florida football and it wouldn’t be in Texas.

Washington State — With Leach leaving for Mississippi State, that leaves big shoes to fill in Pullman. Leach was able to do the difficult — win in Pullman. Not going to be easy for whoever’s next.

Mullen factor: Mullen has already rebuilt a team in Florida football. Pretty sure he’d like to see how far that goes before getting into another rebuilding project. Plus, its Washington.

Cleveland Browns — Really, all you have to say is ‘Cleveland Browns’ to know just what kind of situation it is. Ownership gave Freddie Kitchens a year. How much time do you think they’re going to give the next guy?

Mullen factor: Yeah, just can’t see Mullen moving the Cleveland for this dumpster fire in waiting.

There you have it. That’s it in terms of what’s out there. As I said, the pickings are pretty slim now that Mississippi State, Dallas, Carolina and Washington are all off the table.
