To help shore up its secondary for the next several seasons, Florida football went out and flipped a Tennessee recruit.

Florida football continues to up its recruiting game as they have landed 4-star safety Mordecai McDaniel.

McDaniel originally committed to the University of Tennessee, but somehow had a change of heart and elected to join the Gators in 2020, according to 247Sports.

He plays for St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC and is rated No. 32 for his position nationally and the No. 7 overall recruit from the District of Columbia.

His stock rose tremendously in 2018 when he went from being unranked to the No. 10 prospect in the district, according to Rivals. In March he jumped to No. 7 where he has stayed.

"“Though I really appreciate everything that Tennessee have offered me, I must follow my heart and with that said, I would like to say that I will be attending the University of Florida,” McDaniel said, in his tweet."

According to 247Sports, McDaniel made a visit to Gainesville in April and watched the Florida football spring game. He told the outlet, at the time, he did like what he saw from the Florida football secondary.

“I liked the D.B.U. out there,” McDaniel said following his spring official visit. “I like how they run things and how they run their defense.”

Initially, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound McDaniel chose Tennessee over Florida and Penn State. He made official visits to both Knoxville and State College in June before making his decision back in August.

He also visited Notre Dame in April and was offered by the likes of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Michigan, Mississippi and Central Florida.

McDaniel is also a track athlete with times registering in the sub-11-second marks in the 100-meter dash. Couple his speed with just raw talent and ability and the McDaniel has the potential to be a huge part of the Florida football secondary for at least three years.

Oh, he’s also been used by St. John’s as a receiver, mainly because of his blazing speed.

Earlier, Florida football flipped Georgia recruit and 4-star offensive tackle Josh Braun, who has already arrived on campus in Gainesville.
