Florida football: Gators land 4-star defensive end for 2020

The Florida football team added another big recruit to its class of 2020 on Wednesday. This time, it’s a four-star defensive end who has committed.

The Florida football class of 2020 recruiting class just keeps getting better and better.

Wednesday, four-star defensive end Antwaun Powell announced his commitment to the Gators via his Twitter feed.

Powell is an ESPN 300 player from I.C. Norman High School in Portsmouth, Virginia.

ESPN reported that Powell is the No. 28 overall prospect from the class, bolstering the Gators’ recruiting class. He is the No. 2-ranked recruit from the state of Virginia, according to ESPN.

"“I am very thankful for my family, friends, coaches and the community support I’ve received on and off the field during the recruitment process,” Powell said in his tweet. “With that being said, I feel the best decision for me and I’m excited to announce that I am 100% committed to the University of Florida.”"

He was offered scholarships from Michigan, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech among other schools.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Powell visited Gainesville on June 17 and had also visited Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia Tech in a month.

Powell will make a solid edge rusher for the Gators who have already stacked its defensive recruitment for 2020.

The Gators also have commitments from three-star tackle Lamar Goods, tackles Gervon Dexter and Johnnie Brown and defensive end Morven Joseph.

Adding Powell moved Florida football up to the No. 5 recruiting class for 2020, according to 247Sports. Prior to that, they were ranked No. 7 overall.

In the Southeastern Conference, Florida football has the No. 4 overall recruiting class behind Alabama (No. 2 nationally), LSU (No. 3 nationally) and Georgia (No. 4 nationally). In Florida, Florida State has the No. 8-ranked recruiting class while Miami is at No. 16 nationally.

The Gators have racked up 18 prospects from the class of 2020 with the addition of Powell.

According to 247Sports, Florida football is still in the running for four-star wideout Xzavier Henderson, wide receiver Arian Smith, four-star running back Lawrence Toafili and Oregon commit, safety Avantae Williams — a four-star safety. All four hail from Florida.
