In breaking news this weekend, the Florida football team has flipped a recruit. This time, they picked up a commitment from Penn State.

For the third time in two days, the Florida football team has picked up another verbal commitment.

This time, they actually stole one away.

Four-star linebacker Derek Wingo announced Saturday that he was changed his commitment for 2020 from Penn State to Florida.

The St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) linebacker told 247Sports it was the Gators’ tenacity that made him change his mind. Especially that of linebackers coach Christian Robinson.

He said, in March, the Gators had other things in their column, like fellow Aquinas players Trevon Grimes, Coleman Crozier and Jordan Scarlett.

"“The way their ability to get guys to the NFL, to the next level, build their guys up, and it’s a program on the rise,” he said. “They’re really starting to get to the next level, getting to the SEC Championship is coming up in the future.”"

Connecticut native and four-star defensive tackle Lamar Goods, committed to the Gators on Friday. Jacksonville, Florida three-star defensive back Tre’Vez Johnson announced his commitment to Florida earlier this weekend.

Wingo marks the first linebacker commitment received by Florida football in the 2020 class.

During his recruitment, he also had offers from the likes of Florida International, Florida Atlantic and Florida State along with Clemson, Boston College and Auburn.

Wingo said despite his earlier commitment to the Nittany Lions, he had received contact from Miami, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Oklahoma.

"“They’re down here a lot,” Wingo said of Florida. “They always try to keep in contact with me, texting me. It’s kind of the home school. Miami is close too, but I think Florida presses the most.”"

Wingo is ranked No. 142 overall in the 2020 class.
