#5 John L. Williams (1982-1985)

When most Gator fans think of the number 22, they usually associate it with Emmitt Smith.

A few years before Smith’s arrival in Gainesville, however, the number belonged to John L. Williams. Forming a terrific tandem in the Gator backfield with teammate Neal Anderson, Williams ran for 14 touchdowns and 2,409 rushing yards in his four years as a Gator.

He helped lead Florida to victory in the 1983 Gator Bowl victory and was a member of two 9-1-1 squads.

Some accolades that Williams earned while playing for UF include:

  • Second-team All-SEC in 1984 and 1985
  • Honorable mention All-American in 1985
  • UF Hall of Fame inductee in 1997

After graduating, Williams was selected 15th overall in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He played nine solid seasons in the NFL and made two Pro Bowls. He finished his career as a Pittsburgh Steeler in 1995.
