“I’m with Champ”. That was the resounding response from the Gator players after Will Muschamp and Florida decided to part ways. This game will be the last opportunity to send Muschamp out a winner, and it seems like the perfect opportunity with Florida State waiting. The Seminoles are the last undefeated team in the FBS and are currently in line to defend its national title in the brand new College Football Playoff. The thing is, the Noles have been underwhelming doing so. FSU’s faced big deficits against some of the better teams on their schedule and needed some big comebacks to keep its 27-game winning streak intact. That’s right, 27-games. Who was the last team to beat the Noles? Florida in 2012.
Ten years ago, the unranked Gators had a lame duck coach in Ron Zook, heading to Tallahassee to face a top-10 Seminoles team. Florida and Zook came out winners that day, beating Florida State the day it christened Bobby Bowden Field. The Zooker got carried off the field on his players shoulders. This game feels awfully reminiscent of that one. The Gators have the type of team that could give the Noles fits. There are tons of storylines for the Sunshine State Showdown, including Florida freshman QB Treon Harris and Florida State freshman RB Dalvin Cook and WR Ermon Lane playing the teams they originally committed to. But this is Muschamp’s last game as the Gators head coach. Whatever your opinion of him as a coach is, Muschamp’s handled the past few weeks with incredible class. Sending him out a winner would leave a fond memory in the minds of Gator Nation and firmly entrench him in Gator-lore. Florida can let it all out on the field and alter the course of the college football season. Hopefully the Gators can send Champ out a winner and spoil the Seminoles season.
