Florida’s coaching search just took another sharp turn. What was supposed to be a scheduled meeting with Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall was canceled shortly after it was announced.

Sumrall, one of the fastest-rising coaches in college football, had been viewed as a legitimate candidate early in Florida’s process. His success in rebuilding Tulane and his reputation for toughness, culture, and consistency made him a strong fit for a program desperate for stability. But the canceled meeting signals a confirmation in Florida’s priorities, not because of anything Sumrall did, but because of another name that is clearly at the top of the board.
It's no secret that Florida is making an aggressive push toward Lane Kiffin, and the program appears willing to pour its full attention and resources into trying to pry him away. When a search starts moving this quickly toward one candidate, meetings with others tend to get paused, postponed, or canceled outright.
That’s the situation Sumrall now finds himself in. But this doesn’t damage his standing in the coaching carousel, not even close. In fact, Sumrall is expected to be at the top of the board with Auburn and potentially Ole Miss. He’s built a strong résumé, earned too much respect in athletic departments, and shown too much success in a short amount of time not to remain a relevant name.
Not only is Jon Sumrall’s interview with Florida called off, he’s pulled his name from their search entirely.

That fact is very, very interesting
For Florida, the cancellation underscores how chaotic and competitive their search has become. The Gators haven’t been subtle: they want a splash, and they believe Kiffin is that splash. With his reputation, experience in the SEC, and polarizing-but-magnetic personality, Kiffin is the transformative hire.
But the risk is real. Throwing everything at one coach can backfire if negotiations stall or the candidate ultimately decides to stay put. In that scenario, the Gators would have to circle back, rebuild momentum, and potentially revisit conversations, including with someone like Sumrall.
For now, though, Florida is pushing forward with Kiffin as their clear priority. And while Sumrall’s meeting may have been canceled, his coaching stock hasn’t dipped one bit.
