The 2026 Florida Baseball season came to a crashing halt this week. After getting the No. 8 overall seed, starting 2-0, and seemingly having a clear runway to a 1-0 start in Omaha, the Gators dropped two straight games to Troy and are now sitting at home.

The discourse around Kevin O’Sullivan is in a weird spot because he has never missed the NCAA Tournament, has been to Omaha nine times, but the Gators have been slowly slipping away from the dominance it once had.

With that in mind, we are going to rank all 18 seasons O’Sullivan has had in Gainesville, not factoring in the canceled 2020 campaign. These rankings will be a mixture of regular-season success combined with postseason success.

Florida Baseball seasons ranked worst to first since 2008

No. 18 - 2013

There is no getting around placing the only losing season O’Sullivan has had in the back. The Gators snuck into the NCAA Tournament but were unceremoniously dumped by Austin Peay and Valarasio.

No. 17 - 2008

It’s hard to hold 2008 against O’Sullivan, considering it was his first year with Florida and he was taking over a program that had just missed the tournament in back-to-back seasons. But going off raw data, 2013 and 2008 were the only two years O’Sullivan had a winning percentage below .600 AND failed to win a game in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 16 - 2019

When we talk about the Kevin O’Sullivan Era, 2019 has morphed into a reference point of when the program has taken a bit of a dip compared to how things were from 2010 to 2018. The Gators went 34-26 and were bounced after losing twice to Dallas Baptist.

No. 15 - 2021

This year could have been a lot better as Florida did get to host a Regional and just needed to advance to wind up with at least 40 wins on the season. But the Gators were embarrassed in their Regional by USF and South Alabama, and it was the first time since 2014 that Florida failed to win a game in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 14 - 2014

Speaking of Florida going 0-2, the 2014 season is a weird one to sort through because Florida was clearly better over the course of the season than some of the teams ranked ahead of it. The Gators won 40 games, earned the No. 2 overall seed, and looked positioned to make a real run.

Instead, Florida imploded in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators lost 3-2 to College of Charleston and 5-2 to North Carolina and went 0-2 in their own Regional, and became one of the most disappointing teams of the O’Sullivan Era, given the expectations attached to that season.

No. 13 - 2025

Last year was on track to be the worst season of the Kevin O’Sullivan Era. The Gators started 1-11 in SEC play and were in real danger of missing the tournament. Florida turned things around to finish 15-15 in the SEC and was on track to go north of 40 wins.

But things fell apart in the NCAA Tournament with two losses to ECU and a meltdown by O’Sullivan that earned him a suspension to open the 2026 season.

No. 12 - 2022

Florida’s 2022 season gets a slight bump because the Gators at least made it to a Regional final and finished with 42 wins. They beat Central Michigan twice and were one win away from getting out of the Gainesville Regional.

But this season still falls short because Oklahoma beat Florida twice in Gainesville and ended the Gators’ season before they could even get to a Super Regional. Had there not been a rain delay in the winner-take-all game against Oklahoma, things may have been different.

No. 11 - 2026

From a raw resume standpoint, Florida went 41-21, earned the No. 8 overall seed, started the Gainesville Regional 2-0, and was one win away from hosting a Super Regional. That is not a bottom-five season on paper.

But context matters. Florida had a golden runway after Miami lost in the loser's bracket, and Troy and Little Rock were all that stood between the Gators and Omaha. Instead, we all witnessed the Gators go out in a whimper with very little life.

No. 10 - 2009

The 2009 season was the first real sign that O’Sullivan had Florida moving back in the right direction. The Gators won 42 games, hosted a Regional, beat Bethune-Cookman and Miami, and advanced to a Super Regional.

Getting swept by Southern Miss keeps this from climbing higher, but given where the program was when O’Sullivan arrived, 2009 was still an important step forward. It was not a great Florida season by later standards, but it was the first building block of what was coming.

No. 9 - 2024

There may not be a harder season to rank than 2024.

On one hand, Florida was terrible in the regular season and squeaked into the NCAA Tournament by a single game and was seemingly on the verge of having this go down as one of the worst seasons of the Kevin O’Sullivan Era.

But postseason success matters, and Florida went on a wild run. The Gators won the Stillwater Regional, swept Clemson in a Super Regional, and made it all the way to the CWS semifinals. The regular season keeps 2024 from being higher, but getting to Omaha and winning games once there keeps it firmly above the Regional-only seasons.

No. 8 - 2012

The 2012 Gators were really good for most of the season. Florida went 47-20, won its Regional, swept NC State in the Super Regionals, and made it back to Omaha.

One reason O’Sullivan has the support he does in Gainesville is that his 8th-best season still qualified him for the CWS. Florida lost to South Carolina and Kent State, going 0-2 in Omaha.

No. 7 - 2010

The 2010 season was the start of Florida becoming a true Omaha-level program under O’Sullivan. The Gators went 47-17, won their Regional, swept Miami in the Super Regionals, and reached the College World Series.

Like 2012, the Omaha trip ended quickly, with losses to UCLA and Florida State. But 2010 gets the edge because Florida had the better overall winning percentage and felt like the year the program truly announced that the O’Sullivan Era was going to be different.

No. 6 - 2016

From a regular-season standpoint, 2016 has an argument to be even higher. Florida went 52-16, which is the best winning percentage of any completed O’Sullivan season in Gainesville.

The Gators got through Regionals easily, beat Florida State 2-1 in a Super Regional, and made it to Omaha. Once there, though, they lost to Coastal Carolina and Texas Tech and were sent home without winning a game in the College World Series, which keeps 2016 a bit lower than some of the upcoming seasons.

No. 5 - 2018

The 2018 season was not quite a repeat of the national championship run, but it was still a legitimate title-defense season. Florida went 49-21, won its Regional, survived a tough Super Regional against Auburn with the help of a Jose Canseco-like defensive assist from the Tigers, and made it back to Omaha.

The Gators also won games in Omaha, beating Texas and Texas Tech before Arkansas ended their season in the national semifinals. It wasn’t as clean as 2015, and it didn’t end with a championship like 2017, but it was still one of the better seasons of the O’Sullivan Era.

No. 4 - 2015

The 2015 Gators were one of the most complete teams O’Sullivan has had. Florida went 52-18, rolled through the Gainesville Regional, swept Florida State in the Super Regionals, and then made a real push in Omaha.

The Gators beat Miami twice in the College World Series before Virginia eliminated them 5-4, one game short of the championship series. Given the win total, the postseason record, and the fact Florida reached the CWS semifinals, this is comfortably one of the top four seasons of the era.

No. 3 - 2011

The 2011 season was Florida’s first true national-title-level season under O’Sullivan. The Gators went 53-19, got through their Regional, beat Mississippi State in the Super Regionals, and then advanced all the way to the championship series in Omaha.

Florida would lose to South Carolina in the championship series, but it was a sign that O’Sullivan had firmly turned the program around and a sign of things to come.

No. 2 - 2023

The Gators went 54-17, won 10 postseason games, survived a tricky Gainesville Regional, swept South Carolina in the Super Regionals, and then won their first three games in Omaha, including an iconic home run against Virginia and an iconic catch against TCU.

This year also somewhat hurts because of just how close Florida came to another title. Wyatt Langford nearly had a game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th of game one, only for Florida to lose. The Gators would blow out LSU in game two, only to get blown out in game three and fall one game short of the title.

No. 1 - 2017

There is no real debate at the top.

The 2017 Gators went 52-19, won their Regional, beat Wake Forest 2-1 in Super Regionals, and then went to Omaha and finished the job. Florida beat TCU and Louisville before sweeping LSU, which included an all-in move from O’Sullivan to bring Jackson Kowar out of the bullpen to get out of a jam, in the championship series to win the program’s first national title.

Other Florida teams under O’Sullivan had better winning percentages. Some had cleaner regular seasons. But 2017 is the year Florida finally turned all of that talent and all of those Omaha trips into a championship.
