On a mostly uneventful night in Gainesville, Florida Basketball cruised to a 84-60 win over FAMU to move to 5-0 on the season. The Gators were up 24 points and halftime before a sloppy second half kept the final score line also at 24 points.
Undefeated on the season, here are two truths and a lie for Florida on the young season.
Truth: Florida can score even with poor shooting
Florida jacked up 34 three-point attempts and only made ten of them. As a whole, they shot 28 of 68 on the night.
And yet, the Gators still put up 84 points, 46 of which came in the first half. Will Richard had 20 points, while Walter Clayton had 17.
As a whole, Florida is averaging 87 points a game on the season, the 30th best in the country.
Truth: Urban Klavzar had a rough night
One of the subplots for Florida to open the season was the eligibility status of Urban Klavzar. The guard from Slovenia was billed as a solid shooter, which could serve as a great compliment for Richard and Clayton and, to some extent, be the missing piece for the Gators and their three-point shooting woes.
Klavzar was cleared ahead of the FSU game but played sparringly. In part due to some illness going around the team, Klavzar got 16 minutes against FAMU, and it did not go well.
He was 1-7 shooting and 0-4 from three. He did have three assists and one steal.
Basketball is not the kind of sport to judge someone off one game, so we'll see if Klavzar gets settled in.
Lie: Florida has been tested
Compared to a school like Syracuse or Texas, Florida's schedule so far has been fine. But in reality, their first five games have not been against competition that one would consider the bar to clear if Florida is to take a step forward in 2025.
Florida has won all five of their games by double digits, but their strength of schedule right now is 152nd in the country. Their schedule will start to pick up with matchups against Wake Forest, Virginia, and Arizona State before a 12/17 date with UNC.
