It seems weird to think that Florida Football has a game this week. Much of the chatter surrounding the Gators the past week has been who Florida is or is not pursuing in the transfer portal.
But in the buildup to the Gasparilla Bowl, Tulane coach Jon Sumrall made sure to give high praise to Florida's freshman phenom.
Florida Football: The future is now
Sumrall met with members of the Tulane media on Saturday prior to departing to Tampa for their bowl game. He was asked about Florida and specifically what the mind set for the Green Wave was having to face DJ Lagway.
Sumrall gave high praise for Lagway and then dropped in this comment:
"We're getting ready to play a team that, I think, if (Lagway) had been the starter all year we might be talking about (Florida making the playoffs)"Jon Sumrall
In reality, Florida would have had to go 10-2 in 2024 to make the playoffs, though 9-3 could have been enough had Clemson not snuck in at the end. Most Gator fans feel like is Lagway doesn't get hurt against Georgia, Florida wins that game.
One could also argue had Lagway played the entire game against Tennessee that Florida might have gotten over the finish line in spite of their moments of coaching malpractice that left points on the board.
Whether Florida would have beaten Miami, Texas A&M, or Texas with Lagway as the starter is hard to say, but for the record, we here at Hail Florida Hail stated after the Samford game that Lagway needed to be the starter against Texas A&M rather than the convoluted rotation that Billy Napier used.
Florida takes on Tulane this Friday at 3:30 PM in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium. Tulane has had a handful of opt-outs for the transfer portal, including starting QB Darian Mensah.
Florida is currently favored by 13.5 points.
