Toronto Raptors fans can already see why Florida fans love Alijah Martin

Alijah Martin was a key piece of the Florida Gator's 2025 National Championship, and now Toronto fans are hoping he can bring them an NBA title.

Alijah Martin didn’t quite join Walter Clayton Jr. in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, but he is joining his Florida backcourt mate in the NBA after being selected 39th overall in the second round on Thursday night. Martin was an integral part of Florida’s national title run, averaging 14.4 points and 4.5 rebounds along the way, and Toronto Raptors fans are already head over heels about their team’s newest player.

Alijah Martin fell short of the SEC All-Defensive Team last season, but he finished the season with 1.5 steals a game and was a constant threat to run in transition after forcing a turnover. One of the toughest and strongest players in the SEC last season, the former high school football star will be ready for the physicality of the NBA.

It wasn't just the turnovers that Martin, Clayton, and Will Richard continually forced as Florida's disruptive backcourt trio; it was what Martin particularly did with them that was so demoralizing to opponents. And not that Florida fans would ever forget it, but if anyone else needs a reminder of Martin’s explosiveness in the open floor, here’s Exhibit A:

Isn't that just fun to relive?

The Raptors had a clear philosophy heading into this year’s draft, adding toughness, physicality, and defense, and even if that wasn’t the plan, it’s what they’ve ended up with. Toronto selected another SEC star, South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Bowles, in the first round with the ninth overall pick. Both of the selections together have been lauded by NBA Draft experts.

After a five-year career in Florida, and notably becoming the first player from Florida Atlantic to ever be drafted into the NBA, Toronto will be a big adjustment for Martin off the court. But a team that wants to beat you up and run in transition will have him feeling right at home.
