As training camp has opened for the Florida Gators, most of the starters feel set in stone, barring something unexpected happening. But there are still some rotational pieces that need to be sorted out, and over the next month, we are bound to hear the platitudes of multiple guys on the roster.
It's with that in mind that these are some of the more intriguing battles to take place during camp.
Backup QB
With the lingering issues that keep popping up with DJ Lagway, the battle for the backup QB job might be one that defines the season for Florida.
Aidan Warner is back after he was thrust into action last year against Georgia and Texas. We've beaten a dead horse enough on this site on how his experience did not go well.
On paper, one would think transfer Harrison Bailey should be able to win this position, but he didn't win it in the spring, so who knows what Billy Napier has up his sleeve.
RB3
Assuming Jadan Baugh is RB1 and Ja'Kobi Jackson winds up as RB2, then the battle for RB3 might become a literal old-school WWF "Loser Leaves Town" match.
Treyaun Webb had the RB2 slot last year before getting hurt, and KD Daniels was highly regarded in the class of 2024. But whichever one gets relegated to RB4 is going to have a tough pathway for any meaningful snaps in 2025.
WR3
Like the running backs, assuming that Eugene Wilson and transfer J. Michael Sturdivant are WR1 and WR2/Y and Z receivers, the battle for the WR3/X receiver slot is actually going to be fascinating.
In the spring, it was Aidan Mizell, who enters a make-or-break year with the Gators. But freshman Dallas Wilson is prepared to barge his way in, and one can't rule out Kahleil Jackson if he gets back to full health after tearing his ACL last year.
Cornerbacks
On paper, Devin Moore seems safe as a surefire starter in 2025. The battle to join him on the outside is going to be one to watch.
Teddy Foster, Jameer Grimsley, Cormani McClain, and Dijon Johnson are all potential candidates to land a starting job in 2025, with Johnson having the most on-the-field experience for the Gators but McClain continuing to make progress since transferring in last year from Colorado.
Safeties
This is going to be a battle of the "Old Guard" vs the "New Guard."
In theory, Bryce Thornton and Jordan Castell are entrenched, and there should be minimal drama with this battle.
But highly regarded freshmen Drake Subbs and Lagonza Hayward are ready to pounce if Thornton and Castell don't make progress in 2025.
