Todd Golden to UNC rumors will only heat up after Gators' devastating loss to Iowa

A tough loss in the Round of 32 after a National Championship win a year ago will only fuel the Todd Golden rumors.

A year after winning it all, the Florida Gators are heading home embarrassingly early after being upset in the Round of 32 by the nine-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes. The Gators head home as the first one-seed to be taken out of the NCAA Tournament, and now some rumors could swirl even more about the head coach, Todd Golden.

It feels as if UNC could be very close to cutting ties with head coach Hubert Davis after being upset in the first round by 11-seed VCU in overtime. If Davis is fired, the Tar Heels will be in pursuit of their next head coach, and there have been some rumblings that UNC could target Golden as Davis' replacement.

These rumors began before tipoff of the Florida-Iowa matchup, and it seemed like something silly to think about, but now, after the loss to the Hawkeyes, it could be more of a reality.

UNC has the funds to lure Todd Golden away from Florida

Many Florida fans are unhappy with Golden after the loss to Iowa, especially after he admitted wanting to foul Iowa before the Hawkeyes hit the game-winner, which would have tied the game had both free throws been hit.

Even though Gaotr fans aren't happy with the early exit, that doesn't mean they are ready to be rid of Golden. The Florida head coach did lead the Gators to a National Championship win last season, and it could be the very reason UNC could make a serious push for him.

UNC will struggle contacting coaches still in season if they do decide to fire Davis in the near future, so with Florida's season being over, the Tar Heels could make Golden a big offer that he couldn't refuse.

There is no doubt that UNC has the money to lure Golden away from Florida, and the Vegas oddsmakers aren't ruling out the possibility of him abandoning the Gators. It will all come down to the choice of Davis being fired or not, and who UNC feels will be the best replacement for some success in Chapel Hill.
