It was a largely mundane weekend for Florida Baseball. The Gators swept Harvard, which is winless during the season, and barely had to break a sweat in any of the games. Florida won the opener 12-0 before weather concerns forced a doubleheader on Saturday. The Gators won both of those seven-inning games, 7-0 and 22-6.
Florida is now 15-2 on the year and will travel to FSU for a midweek game on Tuesday before opening SEC play on the road at Tennessee.
Bash 'Em Brothers
Coming into the season, if someone had told you that Colby Shelton would only have one home run through 17 games, you might have had a hint of panic as to where the Florida offense is at.
Thankfully, Brody Donay and Bobby Boser have turn into the Bash 'Em Brothers to provide Florida with more than enough power.
Donay and Boser have upped their homerun totals to 8 and 7, respectively. Those paces probably won't hold once SEC play begins, but both are on track to eclipse 25 homers in 2025.
Aidan King might save this team
If you want a hint of panic for this squad, Jake Clemente and Pierce Coppola sat out the weekend with lingering issues. The prognosis sounds more positive for Clemente than Coppola, but it adds concern about whether the pitching staff for Florida is going to hold up health-wise this year.
Enter Aidan King, who made his first career start on Saturday. King was in total command and went 6.0 innings off just 75 pitches. Both hits he gave up didn't leave the infield and he only walked one batter.
If Coppola's injury winds up being long-term, King has all the tools to slot in as a starter and keep Florida rolling forward.
Pitching should be in good shape against FSU
We noted last week that pitching was going to be in rough shape ahead of taking on UCF, and sure enough that fruition came true. And as the final game against Harvard demonstrated, the depth of Florida's pitching still has its limits.
But one of the benefits of having the double header on Saturday of just seven innings games is that Florida's bullpen should be in good shape for its midweek game against FSU.
Presumably, Billy Barlow will get the start, and Florida will have Alex Philpott and Frank Menendez available.
Also, don't sleep on Jackson Barberi, who had another scoreless inning against Harvard. The freshman has appeared five times for 6.1 innings this season and has yet to give up a run.
