Three position groups Florida Football needs to restock in the transfer portal
The 2024 regular season has come to a close for Florida Football, but already the next month is going to be massive for building the roster for the 2025 season. The winter transfer portal opens next Monday and will be open until December 28.
The past two seasons, Florida has moved slowly in the portal, but the belief this time around is that the Gators will be attacking the portal to shore up some key areas.
The following are the three position groups Florida will most need to address during this portal cycle.
Wide Receiver
Elijhah Badger had 789 yards receiving, Chimere Dike had 687 yards, and Eugene Wilson was the only other player to top 300 yards.
Badger and Dike are gone next year after one year in Gainesville, and so Florida finds itself in the same position they were at the end of last year and needs to find a couple of wide receivers in the portal.
On paper, the Gators will have Wilson, Aidan Mizell, Tank Hawkins, and Marcus Burke as the main returners, along with TJ Abrams and Kahleil Jackson, but that group by itself would have a ton of question marks without a couple from the portal to compliment them.
Safety
Another position group Florida hit hard in the transfer portal last season, the Gators will need to return to the portal as almost everyone they picked up graduates after this year.
The end result is Florida has Jordan Castell, Gregory Smith, and Bryce Thornton coming back as the safties of choice, but like wide receiver, that feels like a group that could benefit from an upgrade in 2025.
Defensive Tackle
Cam Jackson, Desmond Watson, and Joey Slackman are for gone. Caleb Banks could opt to enter the draft, leaving a ton of holes for this unit to fill.
Three of those four came to Florida via the portal, and while the Gators have Michai Boireau and D'Antre Robinson waiting in the wings, it is a unit that will need to be restocked heading into 2025.
