Three position groups Florida Football doesn't need in the transfer portal
The transfer portal will open for business on Monday, and there are some pressing needs Florida Football will need to address, wide receiver being the biggest among them.
But, and this is a good thing, not every group needs to be addressed, and these are three groups that the Gators will be able to get away with not being addressed in the portal.
Running back
Florida is losing Montrell Johnson next season, but the Gators have a solid stable of running backs where Jadan Baugh will be the headliner heading into 2025.
Behind him, the Gators still have Treyaun Webb, who was the backup in 2024 before getting injured. Ja'Kobi Jackson proved his worth this season and averaged 5.4 yards per carry. KD Daniels is waiting in the wings and was a player we were excited for coming out of high school.
And the Gators just signed three running backs on Early Signing Day, with speed back Waltez Clark being the headliner of the group.
Linebacker
Another group the Gators have depth at, Shemar James is slated to come back after taking almost 600 snaps in 2024. Jaden Robinson emerged this year and took over 400 snaps.
Pup Howard should also be back. He had 280 snaps before getting hurt against Texas. Myles Graham started seeing the field a lot more during the back half of the season, and the Gators also got over 100 snaps out of Aaron Chiles.
Add in Ty Jackson and Myles Johnson from signing day and this is a group that should be fine.
Quarterback
Obviously, DJ Lagway is the starting QB in 2024, the question becomes whether or not Florida feels they need to add someone in the portal to be a reliable backup.
On paper, Florida will have Clay Millen and Aidan Warner coming back in 2025. We have said our peace about what exactly happened to Millen this year, that Billy Napier did not even consider playing him even when it was obvious that Warner had his deficiencies.
But Florida also signed four-star QB Tramell Jones for their class of 2025, so that makes four QBs right there.
Now, if someone hops in the portal who the staff feels is better than Millen, Warner, and Jones and is willing to come to be the backup at Florida, then grab him. But that feels like it would be a small pool of candidates to pull from, so we don't imagine much action on this front.
