One of the early tests of the Jon Sumrall Era is going to be just how quickly he is able to revamp the offensive line ahead of the 2026. Sumrall hasn’t been shy about calling out the unit, and last week’s spring game revealed just how far the group still has to go before the Gators have to take the field for real this fall.
But one of Sumrall’s other self-proclaimed calling cards is his ability to rebuild a team through the transfer portal, which makes the offensive line also a test of just how well he is able to spot and grab talent at an SEC level.
Three key transfers could define Florida’s season
There is a pathway where three of the five starters along the offensive line are transfers Sumrall grabbed over the offseason. Where things get dicey is that none of those three come to Gainesville with a super high profile from their previous destination.
Harrison Moore feels like he is probably a lock at center. He came to Florida from Georgia Tech, so he is well-versed in Buster Faulkner’s offense. Moore played 682 snaps last year, and while he didn’t give up a sack, he did give up 15 pressures. By comparison, Jake Slaughter gave up four all of last season.
Emeka Ugori feels like he has the lead for the left tackle spot as that was his primary spot last Saturday. Ugori is an interesting case study because he was mostly a guard at Stanford before sliding over to right tackle late in the season. In his game against UNC towards the end of the season, let’s just say Ugori wasn’t good and he gave up seven pressures in that game alone.
To round out the trio of transfers, Eagan Boyer followed Phil Trautwein from Penn State to Gainesville. His only real action was Penn State’s bowl game against Clemson, where he gave four pressures while playing left tackle.
Restock the cupboard
In one breath, it’s not unfair to state that Sumrall can only work with what was left to him. Billy Napier spent years stocking up on three-star projects with the intention of developing them, only to not actually develop them.
But the trio of transfers are the guys that Sumrall and Trautwein picked. They didn’t go after and/or land any of the bigger names that were floating around out there. So when Sumrall muses about the offensive line, his new center, Moore, worked directly with his new offensive coordinator, and one of his tackles, Boyer, is a direct proteigie of his new offensive line coach. Throw in his other tackle, Ugori, being a complete project and being the one that he and Trautwein chose, there will need to be accountability if this group doesn’t progress in the way they are going to need to for Florida to be competitive.
The good news is that if Florida can build this group up to be middle of the pack, Trautwein has been a recruiting monster on the trail already, and help is on the way.
