The SEC now understands Florida’s growing confidence in Jon Sumrall

Traditionally speaking, SEC Media Days is a chance for coaches to formally lay out their vision for the upcoming season, not just to their own fanbase, but to everyone around the country. Coming into the 2026 edition of the event, however, there wasn’t much left for Jon Sumrall to say that he hadn’t already spent the past six months laying out to Gator fans in interviews and podcast appearances.

But for those who don’t consume podcasts on the Florida Gators, Wednesday was that traditional introduction of Sumrall. And while some got their feathers ruffled, most walked away with the understanding of why Gator fans have had a quiet confidence about Sumrall, even when he wasn’t their first pick to become the new head coach.

We should stress up front that winning on media day doesn’t automatically translate to winning on the field. But there is something to be said for one’s ability to command a room and how that can translate to one’s ability to command a locker room.

What Florida fans saw on Wednesday in Tampa was simply a continuation of what we have seen from Sumrall all offseason. He has a charm, he can articulate, and he has the type of edge to him that one would want out of a football coach.

That edge didn’t appeal to everyone, as some, including former Indiana and Georgia basketball coach Tom Crean, cried foul to Sumrall’s response to a reporter’s phone going off in the middle of his time on the podium.

We should pause here to point out that Tom Crean had Anthony Edwards on his team and still couldn’t manage a winning record.

But for most who understand the SEC and understand Sumrall’s personality, they walked away from Tampa going “Man, Florida got a good one.”


As we highlighted last week, it feels somewhat weird for Gator fans in July getting compliments from everyone around the SEC and the country for Florida’s coaching hire when Gator fans were a bit of a laughing stock after whiffing on Lane Kiffin. And while Sumrall will still need to win games for any of this to matter, there is a world where he winds up being a better fit for Florida than Kiffin. 

Sumrall has embraced everything about Florida’s culture, and he feels like someone built out of a Create A Coach mode for the SEC.

Those who think he is trying to fail hard to be this personality or this character should understand that he has given far too many interviews at this point for this to be an act. What you saw on Wednesday is what Gator fans have seen since December.

Now it just needs to translate on the field.
