The Royal Rumble happened yesterday, and the tension wasn’t that high in the grand scheme of things. Roman Regins walked away as the winner in a move that shocked exactly zero people actually paying attention.
But while the drama in the WWE may not be that high, the drama between Florida and Alabama in basketball is as high as it has ever been. In fact, WWE script writers could take a page or two from Todd Golden and Nate Oats ahead of Sunday’s clash.
Todd Golden and Florida set for Alabama showdown
There is a theory in wrestling that wrestling without storytelling is just dudes doing gymnastics. There is plenty of storytelling to go around as Florida is set to host Alabama at 1 PM on ABC.
For starters, the Gators have a four-game winning streak in this series, including winning both meetings last year. Florida won the national title last year while Alabama fell short and lost in the Elite Eight. This year, Florida is ranked 19th while Alabama is 23rd. But all of that backdrop pales in comparison to the drama that has been happening off the court and Todd Golden’s crusade to speak out against it.
Charles Bediako played two years for Alabama, left, played multiple years in the G-League, and now has received a temporary injunction to be cleared to come back to the Crimson Tide and be eligible to play. The judge who granted Bediako the ability to play for now is an Alabama booster.
Even HHH couldn’t write a story this comical.
Golden hasn’t been shy about speaking out against Bediako’s clearance, and Alabama has made it clear they have heard the noise ahead of 1 PM. Like a good old-fashioned heel, they honestly believe that they are the victims in this story. And like any heel, Nate Oats was already working the refs in his press conference this week.
At this point, we wouldn’t be shocked if former Auburn coach Bruce Peral comes running out of the crowd and runs interference in a swerve no one saw coming because there are bound to be more twists and turns in this saga.
But despite all of Alabama’s gimmicks and tricks, as Macho Man Randy Savage once said, the cream always rises to the top.
