Joseph Mbatchou got a taste of life in the trenches last season and now defensive line coach Gerald Chatman is ready to unleash the sophomore on the SEC.
Mbatchou appeared in nine games last season and played 135 snaps. In three games (Miami, Mississippi State and Tennessee), the interior big man played over 25 snaps. He probably would've gotten closer to 200 snaps if not for a couple of nagging injuries that forced him to miss a few games. But Chatman, the only holdover on the coaching staff from last season, is ready to ramp up Mbatchou this spring to challenge incumbent starter Brendan Bett at the nose tackle position.

Mbatchou was a four-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. He was one of the Gators' big recruiting wins in that class, flipping the Atlanta metro area prospect from Texas during the summer of 2024.
Joseph Mbatchou is in line to take a big leap in 2026
One of the things Mbatchou had to do this offseason was put on some more size. He weighed about 300 pounds during his freshman season and added over 20 pounds onto his frame coming into the spring. Mbatchou is currently listed at 323.pounds.
Chatman sees Mbatchou a natural disruptive force in the middle of the defensive front, one that can stuff the run, take on the double teams and get into the backfield on passing downs. It's a lot to ask of a young player, but Chatman believes Mbatchou has the foundation to be a special talent.
"'He's a striker, man. He's a striker. He's heavy-handed. He's going to have to continue to work his footwork and stay off the ground and make sure that he has really good run agility," Chatman said. "But he can convert to the quarterback and has good conversion rush. I think that he's a guy that's – he's an impactful guy when he's there."
Mbatchou is one of those guys that looks amazing coming off the bus. He's big, strong and has all the physical tools to be a special player. This is the time for him to take a big step forward and begin to put it all together.
