Florida’s downfall over the past two games has been one of the more sudden 180-degree turns any program has made in the modern era. It’s not to say that there weren’t looming issues with the team that were masked by their 4-0 start, but in the span of two games the Gators went from a team that was given a 48% chance to make the playoffs to a team that looks like it could legit struggle to make a bowl game in 2026.
Front and center of Florida’s sudden turn is Jon Sumrall himself, who seemed like a completely different human on Saturday than the man we witnessed all offseason long.
Jon Sumrall looked like a deer in the headlights against South Carolina
Prior to the game against FAU, Sumrall had a fiery speech that Gator fans loved. After beating Auburn, Sumrall ran into Florida’s locker room and triumphantly had a message for the Tigers that wasn’t necessarily family-friendly. Against Ole Miss, Sumrall smashed a headset after a negative play.
But these past two weeks, we have seen no signs of that same level of fire. We would almost dare say that when the camera has panned to Sumrall these past two weeks, his reactions have mirrored those of The Man in the Black Polo. Hell, we litteraly commented on Friday about the lack of passion that Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles has on the sidelines, only for Sumrall to look just as apathetic at times on Saturday.
We’re not going to speculate on why things suddenly feel different; we just know that they feel different.
And this is where an early potential red flag with Sumrall comes into play.
To make it as an SEC coach, one either has to be a complete savant on one side of the ball, or they need to be a master motivator. Dan Mullen wasn’t the greatest leader, but his tactical acumen gave Florida three successful seasons before the program fell off in 2021. The Man in the Black Polo was neither a savant nor a motivator, and Florida became a train wreck.
Sumrall himself falls more into the motivator category, as it seems clear he is not a defensive wizard.
There is a pathway for it to work, but if he is going to have a deer in the headlights look the moment things go south, that’s a problem.
